Reaction to “Doctors’ Beliefs Hinder Patient Care” by Sabrina Rubin Erdely
The article titled Doctors’ Beliefs Hinder Patient Care” authored by Sabrina Rubin Erdely focuses on the effects of religious beliefs of doctors on the quality of care they provide to patients. Erdely uses real cases to demonstrate that some doctors refuse to offer certain healthcare services due to their religious beliefs. For instance, some doctors that are followers of the Catholic religion refuse to offer healthcare services involving artificial birth controls, abortion, surrogate motherhood and in vitro fertilization. Although the law tends to favor the doctors in such situations, the standard of care they offer is adversely affected, and the results have devastating effects on the patients.
If I were a doctor, I would give priority to ensuring that I provide patients with the best care. Unlike the doctors mentioned by Erdely, such as Dr. Gish, I would always try to give consideration to every patient’s situation and help where I can. Based on my personal beliefs, I can only avoid doing procedures or giving medications that would harm the patient. However, I can be bound not to offer certain medications or conduct certain medical procedures by the organization I work for, such as a Catholic hospital. In such situation, I would be transparent and explain to the patients that my organization does not allow me to give the treatments and then refer the patients to other organizations where they can get it.
Although patients have the right to determine the kind of treatment to be given to their children, I can support a situation in which a parent is taken to court if his or her decision is likely to cause significant harm to the child. For instance, a patient who refuses treatment for a child that has been diagnosed with a deadly communicable disease, yet the disease is likely to spread to other children, should be taken to court and the child should be treated against the parent’s wishes.
