Developing a Proposal for Community Collaboration
Successful establishment of a Family Literacy Centre requires joint efforts of all the participants that will be involved currently and in the future (Lake, Baerg, & Paslawski, 2015). This paper presents an explanation of the skills, competencies and knowledge that I would use to facilitate cooperation between all the key stakeholders in an effort to establish a true Family Literacy Centre.
The Necessary Communication and Collaboration Skills
There are several vital skills that I would use to promote effective communication with stakeholders involved in the establishment of a Family Literacy Centre, such as families, government agencies, other schools, donors, charity foundations and other interested organizations (Lake et al., 2015). First, I will need to have ability to speak clearly during direct or indirect meetings with the stakeholders (Lake et al., 2015). Since I might be prompted to send written messages via email, mail and other channels to families and organizations involved, I will need to have effective writing skills. Given the nature of the task, I will have to use ability to persuade and negotiate with the stakeholders. I will need to efficiently utilize my listening and verbal communication skills. I will need to use presentation skills such as the ability to develop rapport with the audience (Blokdijk, 2015). Last, I will need to apply my ability to use body language and to understand non-verbal cues of others.
In order to enhance collaboration between different stakeholders, I will have to develop outstanding team working skills, ability to share suggestions, ideas and information. It will also require competence in supporting group decision-making, solving conflicts, and handling opinions of different people tactfully as well as experience in managing the communication between individuals (Lake et al., 2015). Effective application of the required communication skills is part of corroboration skills that will be needed (Blokdijk, 2015).
Other Tools/Strategies or Leadership Skills
To enhance cooperation between different stakeholders, I will adopt a participative leadership strategy. I will also apply important leadership qualities such as such as the ability to inspire others, problem analysis and solving skills. I will need to adopt a suitable leadership style, such as the corroborative leadership style. The matter will also require my strong ability to build relationships, develop and convey strategic goals and objectives as well as implement innovations (Cragan, Wright & Kasch, 2008). In order to gather the necessary information related to the proposed project, I will also need to have ability to apply research strategies and tools effectively (Cragan et al., 2008).
Cultural Competencies Needed to Engage Families
In multicultural settings, stakeholders of Family Literacy Centres are likely to include people with different cultural values, beliefs and practices (Lake et al., 2015). In this case, the stakeholders of the proposed Family Literacy Centre will most probably engage families who use different languages in their daily communication and have varying cultural and social backgrounds. To address such families, I will need to utilize my knowledge of different cultures and history of various communities living within the proximity of the place where the Family Literacy Centre will be established. Further, I will need to raise my awareness about how norms and culture of these communities affect their communication (Lake et al., 2015). I will need to apply my knowledge about the differences in pragmatic communication between people from different cultural backgrounds. For instance, non-native English speakers tend to use more direct language than the native speakers and thus, the latter tend to be more polite than the former (Cragan et al., 2008). My profound knowledge of the distinctions between beliefs held in various communities will be required for reconciling interactions between people from different families. Further, I will need to be able to handle cultural stereotypes that might interfere with communication between families from different communities. To cap it all, I will also need to apply my ability to adapt to the behaviours of different families (Lake et al., 2015).
Persuading Other Organizations to Help Encourage Family Participation
The establishment of a Family Literacy Centre cannot be successful if the families that are expected to benefit from it are not actively involved in planning processes and in decision-making (Lake et al., 2015). As such, there will be a need to convince the supporting organizations to assist in encouraging families to participate. I will send messages through channels such as internet and mail to the organizations involved to discuss strategies that could enhance the families’ participation. During face-to-face meetings with the stakeholders, I will also stress the importance of encouraging the participation by families. Therefore, my advanced persuasion skills, writing skills and listening ability, among other communication skills, will be required.
Overall, effective application of communication, cooperation, leadership and intercultural communication skills will help to bring all stakeholders together so as to increase the chances of succeeding in the process of establishing a Family Literacy Centre. To achieve the ultimate goal, there will be a need to seek the help of the supporting organizations in order to encourage participation by families.
