Assignment Reflective Journal
The Geert Hofstede’s theory on cultural dimensions has been very informative part of Unit 1. The theory enabled me to learn to compare different national cultures. I learned that some cultures are closely related while others are not. Prior to reading the theory, I never thought of comparing the cultures of the people of US and people from countries such as China, UK and Saudi Arabia. One of the Unit 1 activities was to compare the national cultures of the four countries mentioned above and to determine how close they are to the national culture of the people of the US.
When I started reading Hofstede’s theory, I did not experience a lot of challenges since I found a lot of information about the cultural dimensions described in it in the internet. I felt that searching information about the theory on the internet would help to improve my research skills. I searched information from credible sources such as books and journal articles. Although I found very many sources containing the information, I understood the theory after reading through just a few sources.
Applying the knowledge I gained in an assignment helped to improve my knowledge further. I noted that most western countries have many similarities in their cultures. Also, I realized that cultures of countries in Asia have many similarities. For instance, there are many similarities in the cultures of the people of the US and the people of the UK. In both countries, people tend to express individualism, low level of uncertainty avoidance and high level of uncertainty avoidance. In China and Saudi Arabia, people tend to express collectivism, just like in many other countries in Asia.
However, I realized that the cultures of people in some countries differ significantly from the cultures of people in the same regions. For instance, people of Latin America tend to express collectivism and thus, they are different from the people of the US. While power distance tends to be very high among the people of Latin America, it tends to be low in the US. A was surprised to realize how the cultural dimensions influence the values of people. Collectivism, for instance, influences people to value working together and sharing what they earn. Conversely, individualism influences people to work hard while paying more attention on their individual interests.
While trying to explore the practical applications of the theory, I realized that the cultures influence how people interact. Due to the high power distance among people in most Asian countries such as Saudi Arabia, men have much more power than women. In the US, men have almost equal power with their wives. I realized that the cultures can influence even the extent to which people invest their income. People with long-term orientation value engaging in economic development than people with short-term orientation.
Although I found the theory being helpful in analyzing the cultures and values of people in different countries and regions, I was tempted to criticize it. I felt concern that the theory relies on the assumption that all people of the same country have a similar culture, yet that is not always the case. In a country where individualism is prevalent such as the US, there are small groups of people that express collectivism, such as gun members. Thus, the theory is good to me but I feel that it needs to recognize the small cultures that exist within the mainstream cultures.
