Argumentative free essay: Reflecting on an Article
Reflecting on an Article
The article titled Help for a Start-Up, but at a High Price published on January 2nd 2013 in the New York Times newspaper describes the challenges that a young Australian woman faced as she tried to establish start-up business in New York, US. The young woman, called Ms. Jacqui Rosshandler, tried to establish a business for producing and selling a breath-freshening product called EATWHATEVER but was unable to raise capital from banks and venture capitalists (Grossmann, 2013). When reading the article, I noticed that Ms. Rosshandler had an entrepreneurial spirit but just like many other emerging entrepreneurs, the inability to raise enough capital dimmed her prospects.
Ms. Rosshandler is an example of many people with entrepreneurial mind that work as employees. She is very creative as demonstrated in the way she developed her product. Although she derived the idea to develop the EATWHATEVER from another product that she had seen in the South African market called Odor-Go, she modified her product in a way that made it very unique. Since her product was new in the US market, however, she needed a lot of capital especially for the purpose of marketing. In my view, she needed to give a clear description of the product to the consumers. Thus, the initial capital would be significantly high, considering that she would need to market the product aggressively, in addition incurring production costs.
Ms. Rosshandler’s business seems viable as demonstrated in her initial sales. Probably, an issue in her business plan, such as lack of a solid marketing plan, might have contributed to the lack of support by banks and venture capitalists. Although she already started working as a saleslady after the failure to raise the required capital, I believe that she still has a chance to raise the capital and support her business. Initially, as advised by experts in the article, she should focus on using her savings and seek more funding from friends and relatives. Her business, in my view, can grow to become a very large one as many large businesses faced such challenges during start-up.
