Study 1- Quantitative Study: The Lived Experience of Adults Bereaved by Suicide
The research topic for the study is “The lives experience of adult bereaved by suicide.” Suicide cases as captured by various research studies has been on the rise in Ireland and its impact in terms of grief, making sense of the death, and mean making are phenomenon that are of interest in understanding how individuals cope with this tragedy.
The research design employed in this study is qualitative nature. According to Grady (1998) qualitative research is a study conducted under natural conditions and seeks to understand, describe and interpret a given behavior or phenomenon.
The purpose of the study is to understand and describe the experience of adults that have been bereaved by their loved ones through suicide and explore the challenges faced in coping with the tragedy. The study helps to understand what affects the intensity of grief, perception and coping mechanisms following social interactions after the predicament. The study also helps to identify proper support services for bereaved persons.
Overreaching research question for this study is, “what is your experience following a suicide of a loved one?” Specific research questions include; one, what has been your experience following a suicide of a relative? Two, how have you managed to cope with the bereavement? Third, what challenges have you faced in the process of coping with the bereavement? Key hypothesis include; suicide of a relative is not a traumatic experience for the bereaved; Coping with the suicide has not been a painful experience; there are no challenges in coping with the suicide;
Study 2- Quantitative Study
The research topic is “Mixed methods for mixed reality: Understanding users’ avatar activities in virtual worlds.” The influence of virtual world in education as learning mode is interesting and offers added benefits to non-traditional teaching methods to a wide audience.
The purpose of the study is to understand the trends in avatar related activities in Whyville website as platform for social interaction. The significance of this study is that it helps to improve interactions and use of avatars among individuals that use the online facility.
Overreaching research question for this study is, “How has avatar modification impacted on user activities in Whyville network?” Specific questions include; How much activity in Whyville pertains to avatar modification? Does the level of avatar-related activity differ for different types of users? What meanings do users ascribe to their avatars and related activities? Specific hypothesis include: Avatar modification does not influence activities at Whyville network; The level of avatar related activities does not differ for different types of users; and Whyville users do not ascribe any meaning to their avatars and related activities.
Study 3: Qualitative_Quantitative study (mixed research design)
The research topic is, “Illicit use of prescription ADHD medications on a college campus: A multimethodological approach.” The increased misuse of ADHD drugs among university and college students warrants the study to identify the reasons behind the illicit use.
The purpose of the study is to provide in-depth information of users’ behaviors, conceptions and choices and the motives behind illicit use of ADHD prescriptions. The study is significant in that universities and policy makers will know the influencing factors, motives for continued use, how and where the students access these medications. This will help in the development of suitable interventions and campaigns to tame the vice.
Key research question for this study is, “why is there high illicit use of prescription of ADHD medication in the college?” Specific questions include; Why do college students abuse prescription of ADHD medication? What motivates continued illicit use of prescription of ADHD? Where do students obtain ADHD prescriptions? How do students obtain ADHD prescriptions? Specific hypothesis for the study include: There is no illicit use of prescription of ADHD medication; Nothing motivates continued use of ADHD prescription among students; and ADHD medication is not accessible to students.
