Theory is the most acceptable explanation for the historic mass extinction patterns that are reported to have occurred millions of years ago. A lot of ecological studies have been devoted to unravel the reasons behind the reported mass extinctions. Due to the antiquity element of the topic, there are very few resource materials that can complement the always doubtful available archaeological evidence. In a world experiencing massive developments in technological advancement, more beautiful theories will be formulated to fit in the diverse lines of thoughts by various researchers. Complex explanations are continually formulated by the technologically formulated perspectives, particularly due to the uncoordinated approach in which the research is conducted. In line with the already existing controversy regarding the actual cause of the massive extinction, the truth is likely to be more remote in every theory departing from the basic logic of the living system. The following discourse attempts to retaliate that the only tenable explanation to massive organism extinction lies in the biology and factors affecting the living system. In other words, the balance in ecological factors such as biotic and abiotic factors is the most applicable explanation to massive extinctions reported in ancient organism populations’ history.
Basic biological studies that monitor the integrity of a living organism and the likelihood of succumbing to extinction apply the postulate that the living system is composed of the ecological analysis of the life of the organism. Under the explanation of ecological tenets of life, two factors come into play. On one hand, there are biotic or the living factors such as genetics and physiological integrity while on the other hand, abiotic factors or non living factors such as the environmental characteristics come into effect. Without a balance in the two sets of factors, it is difficult for any living organism to survive. This implies that a certain set of factors appearing to favour life could be available but due to the absence of the other, survival becomes difficult (Arens and West, 456). When survival becomes difficult, the organism puts to task a natural system of selection for the best fitted individuals who can survive the imbalance resulting in adaptation and evolution. If the imbalance is rapid and severe, massive extinction is likely to occur leaving only a few lucky individual species. It is therefore clear that a certain balance exists between the factors supporting life of an organism, namely biotic and abiotic factors, which must exist in tandem to facilitate life.
A good explanation to the balance of the two factors and how the imbalance causes disturbance in the system causing massive extinction can be illustrated by an upset in environmental factors. Climate change as understood in the current global debate causes a serious setback in the appropriate environmental set factors. Rapid occurrence of the factors upset makes it difficult for the organisms to have enough time to adapt and evolve to face the severe conditions. In the process of the imbalance, the biotic factors are severely damaged to such an extent that life is terminated. Climate change for instance causes rapid changes in temperatures that the suitable habitat is established in.
Extreme temperatures not only interfere with food availability factors but also interfere with reproductive integrity of the organisms. Temperature changes may also alter the immune response that the organism launches against illnesses causing an increase in vulnerability and succumbing to opportunistic and rather harmless microorganisms and infections (Arens and West, 458). In various other ways, an upset in a single life supporting factor in the living systems can cause massive extinction, making ecological perspective the most appropriate explanation.
Other theories have a marked weakness in their design in that they rely heavily on the dinosaurs’ extinction alone. Failure to involve other living organisms in the extinction equation beats the logic since none is exempt. Besides, dealing in single sided factors alone causes to explain the extinction mechanism in other theories. For instance, the asteroid extinction theory gives an account of environmental factors alone, conspicuously ignoring the other type of life factors (Coffey, 1). It is therefore clearly evident from other theories that some link is missing in explaining massive extinction, a matter well handled by ecological explanation which is practically manifested in the current climate change situation.
In conclusion, basic principles of biology and science hold the key to major problems occurring in the modern world. Sophistication might not solve our problems due to increase in controversial arguments while simplicity seems to offer undoubted position on major explanations. In line with the above life support facts, massive extinction is explained by basic ecological foundations which appear to be forgotten in major theoretical arguments (Griffen, 1274). Perhaps with such a simplified approach, the global campaign to conserve the environment will be sustained since our very own lives could be at stake while sophisticated explanations to extinction wrongly point at other causes.
