How the mathematical golden ratio is used in nature, music, and sex appeal
Involvement of mathematical theme in geometry as well as in design demonstrates the complexity of the discipline in the solving some human needs and achieve aesthetic touch in creations. Artful incorporation of mathematics in various thoughtfully developed ideas has had an amazing result of aesthetics that none can dispute. Apparently, mathematics is the most applicable discipline across all systems in the universe that man can try to comprehend; at least Einstein, a contemporary genius worked tirelessly to reveal the universality of mathematics. That is as far as synthetic systems are concerned, but basic natural systems obey mathematical tenets in a similar if not in a more elaborate way. This discourse attempts to shed light on the basic application of mathematics, particularly the golden ratio to some of the most fascinating natural interactions that man makes with the environment and with each other.
Thesis statement: fascinating facts around man’s life show a system that obeys mathematical golden ratio constructs, particularly with regard to nature, music and sex appeal.
The golden ratio is developed by from the extreme and mean ratio rule that states that “a straight line is said to have been cut in extreme and mean ratio when, as the whole line is to the greater segment, the greater to the lesser,” (Euclid of Alexandria as cited in Livio, 1). The ratio of the straight line’s unequal segments is the origin of several natural scenes of mathematics interaction with nature. Only a handful of retrogressive and conservative theorists have risen to offer sensible criticism to the best explanation to mathematical infusion to nature’s inseparable interaction with mathematical theory. Perhaps the best brain that this age has experienced was possessed by Einstein who devoted much of his intense academic work to find out on the natures engagement with mathematics. According to Livio (1), several natural arrangements remain strictly controlled by the ratio such as the patterns seen in leaf structures and arrangement on the branches (phyllotaxis), seed arrangement patterns on plants as well as formation of natural crystals (Saler, 43). The Fibonacci sequence explains the patterns employed in botanical systems which depict market design and order that no other discipline elaborates on but mathematics. In light of these phenomena, mathematics fascinating facts in nature as dictated by the golden ratio seems to be the best explanation behind nature’s orderliness.
Musical code is purely mathematical in a dramatic manner that demonstrates the applicability of mathematics in the mathematical theory just like in other natural fields. The mathematical set obeys a distinct characteristic from which the beautiful array of tone and notes emanates. Earliest theorists of sound are thought to have sought explanations from mathematics and once again, the Fibonacci sequence which is developed from the golden ratio of mathematics (Livio,1). Perhaps mathematical phenomena in nature are best explained by clearly scalable occurrences such as the musical scale built on a set of notes and rhythmic structures. The repetitive nature of musical notes clearly qualifies music into a set that mathematical constructs can easily be sought. It is from such explanation that the musical notes system fits in the set theory and the number theory.
Sex appeal from beauty is a natural phenomenon that applies mathematical interpretation and inference drawing, wired in the natural system of the human brain. Symmetry in body shape of a human being goes beyond beauty tenets since the wiring in the brain for a possible mate interprets it as a code and decodes it to responds appropriately to sexual advances. A good look on the face translates into natural fitness indicator whose indication and determination is inbuilt in the natural system of those observing it. A face closely shaped in acceptance of the golden mathematical ratio which gives golden triangles that divide the face into segments is more beautiful naturally (Paqano, 1). The golden rule sequence divides the beautiful face into definite patterns that the geometrical analysis of the human body finely reveals. In the natural settings, the sexual appeal is an inbuilt capacity to decode the congruence of a beautiful face with the mathematical ratio. There are certain ratios which guide the face beauty such as;
“Length of head : Width of head
Top of head to pupil : Pupil to lip
Pupil to nose : Nose to chin
Nose to chin : Lips to chin
Hair to eyes : Width of eyes
Width of Nose : Length of lips,” Wright (1).
Going down to genetics, the representation of a good bill of beauty is a presentation of powerful genes in the individual, which translates in natural fitness for the individual. Fitness rules in a mate always gear towards bearing of offspring that are capable to withstand natural challenges and propagate the human species in successive generations. According to Saler (43), nature has such body rules under the golden ratio such as matching the height with naval height to depict a beautiful definition.
